Question 1

What should I do if my furnace isn't working?

Accepted Answer

Start with the simple checks: make sure the thermostat is set to heat and above room temperature, confirm the furnace switch and breaker are on, check that the filter isn't clogged, and make sure the gas supply valve is open. If the furnace still won't run, it's time for a technician to look at it. If you ever smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility's emergency line first.

Question 2

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

Accepted Answer

Cold air can come from a dirty filter restricting airflow, a thermostat fan set to ON instead of AUTO, a flame sensor or ignitor issue, or a safety switch shutting the burners down while the blower keeps running. Some of these are easy fixes, others need a proper diagnosis — we can check the system and explain what we find.

Question 3

How do I know if my furnace needs to be replaced?

Accepted Answer

Age, repair history and efficiency all matter. Furnaces past roughly 15–20 years that need frequent or expensive repairs, heat unevenly, or run constantly are often better candidates for replacement. We'll look at the condition of your specific unit and lay out the options rather than push a decision.

Question 4

Is it better to repair or replace an old furnace?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the cost of the repair relative to the value and remaining life of the unit. A modest repair on a newer furnace usually makes sense. A major component failure on an aging system often doesn't. We'll give you the numbers for both paths so you can decide.

Question 5

How often should a furnace be serviced?

Accepted Answer

A yearly service before heating season is a good general rule, plus changing or cleaning the filter every one to three months depending on the filter type and your household. Regular maintenance helps a system run efficiently and makes problems easier to catch early.
